1792 1C Washington Roman Head Cent--Rim Damage--NCS. Proof, VG Details. Baker-19, Breen-1249, "Very rare." Breen credits teenaged engraver John Gregory Hancock as the designer of the seldom-seen Roman Head Washington piece. The Westwood Mint, Hancock's employer, attempted to secure a coinage contract with the fledgling U.S. Federal government. Instead, the United States chose to strike its own coins. Per Breen, Hancock exacted revenge by depicting Washington in the guise of a corrupt, Caligula-like Roman emperor. Only a small number were struck. Breen states, "About 12-15 known, all proofs (several impaired, one worn - apparently a pocket piece); at least 5 are impounded in museums." He adds, "These cents have become among the most highly coveted of Washington items." Perhaps the aforementioned "pocket piece" is the present well circulated mahogany-brown example, which has several rim dings but is otherwise smooth.
