1790 The Apotheosis of Franklin Textile
1790 "The Apotheosis of Franklin" Memorial Textile. This textile measures 32" x 24" and was printed as a memorial to Franklin on cloth fabric with the ornately printed images of both Washington in his military uniform and Benjamin Franklin in his famous beaver cap. Titled "The Apotheosis of Franklin" it was created in 1790 to honor his death. It is well documented and is also listed on page 51 of Herb Collins' important reference work published by the Smithsonian, Threads of History. It has been stitched to a light backing cloth for better preservation and a few ancient trivial defects have been repaired. The highly decorative design features Washington driving a leopard-drawn chariot, bearing the figure of the Indian Princess of America. Other rare copies of this cloth were known to have been printed in red and blue, but the brown and white version seen here, is found with much less frequency. A few minor stains throughout but overall the condition is excellent and would look impressive as a display piece.
