George Washington Printed Textile: “Apotheosis of Franklin” with Legend: “WHERE LIBERTY DWELLS THERE IS MY COUNTRY”
c. 1790 Federal Period, Benjamin Franklin & George Washington, “The Apotheosis of Franklin,” Memorial Historic Cotton Textile depicting Benjamin Franklin with George Washington, About Extremely Fine.
Listed as Number 8, page 51, of the Smithsonian Reference book, “Threads of History” by Collins. This impressive George Washington theme Textile measures about 19.75” x 25.75", and titled: “The Apotheosis of Franklin.” Printing is brown with a reddish tint. This historic textile features two richly symbolic vignettes, including George Washington and bearing the figure of the Indian Princess “America” in a Leopard-drawn chariot, behind are two Native American Indians, and the Liberty Tree, and has Benjamin Franklin and “Liberty” holding a banner reading: “WHERE LIBERTY DWELLS THERE IS MY COUNTRY.” This is near to the “Temple of Fame,” where two Cherubs are holding a Map of the eastern United States. This example is impressive in its overall quality and eye appeal. There are some minor pulls at lower left edge along Washington’s right side, being next to Liberty’s hair. Overall, the quality and condition is quite excellent and it appears quite impressive. This Museum quality Post-Revolutionary War Federal Period piece stands as a memorial to Benjamin Franklin created to honor Franklin upon his death in 1790. Extremely suitable for framing and display.
