1st Obverse 1790 George Washington Manley Medal Struck During His Lifetime As Listed In “100 Greatest American Medals and Tokens” PCGS Certified AU-53
1790 George Washington “Manly” Medal. First Obverse. Bronze. Baker-61B. PCGS graded About Uncirculated-53.
This exceedingly important and historic 1790 George Washington “Manley” Medal is Ranked 17th in the popular reference book entitled, “100 Greatest American Medals and Tokens”. Indeed, it is one of the greatest medals in the field of collecting historic Washingtonia, as this medal was actually struck during George Washington's lifetime and while as Acting President of the United States. This example is in very choice quality for its 1st Strike Obverse and is PCGS certified About Uncirculated-53. Its Dies were by James Manley (active 1790–1800), made in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It has rich original chestnut to chocolate-brown somewhat glossy surfaces with excellent eye appeal to its sharply struck obverse, having only a hint of friction is visible. The reverse strike is very typical for this medal, only lacking the sharpness of definition to the central reverse legends. This “as made” condition was caused by the high relief design provided to the wonderful Portrait of George Washington on the obverse, requiring a greater medal flow directed into that highlight portion. Its high rims are in excellent condition, being sharp without having any bumps or bruises. The planchet shows no serious marks or pitting, though there are a few scattered tiny pinpricks in the reverse lower right field, otherwise being as made. Several examples were sold in the 2004 John Ford Jr. Collection Sale, subsequently at auction was an example offered by American Numismatic Rarities, Old Colony Auction, 2005 sold for $4,370.
