(1789) Washington Inaugural Button, “G W” in Oval, Cobb-5b, Albert WI-11B, DeWitt-GW 1789-8, Baker-1017, Brass, with Original Shank, Choice About Uncirculated.
34.1 mm. This gorgeous fully original George Washington Inaugural Button with its scarcer “G W” central letters being of the major “Wider” type, and the button’s Original Shank is fully intact, superb in condition and is perfectly straight as made. A remarkable high quality example with subtle golden-brass toning with some attractive violet-blue on its face, with natural even rich brown tone to the more protected back, as shown. Overall, this button’s surfaces are smooth, hard and glossy with significant eye appeal. The “mat” pattern in the oval field behind “G W” are perfectly sharp and clear, having no typical encrustation or defects. All details appear distinct, clear and bold, the face shows just a hint of use when worn, possibly lightly cleaned a couple centuries ago. A wonderful quality example of this historic (1789) George Washington Inaugural Button. Provenance: From the historic Cobb Collection, sold with its 2003 Auction Lot Tag, plus with the original handwritten “Cobb” Collection inventory attribution sticker.
