1789 TOKEN Mott Token, Thin Planchet, Engrailed Edge AU50 PCGS.
1789 TOKEN Mott Token, Thin Planchet, Engrailed Edge AU50 PCGS.<p>Believed to have been made somewhat later, presumably the 1789 date refers to the origination of the Mott firm. The thin planchet with engrailed edge is scarcer than those with plain edges or on thick planchets. Rare at this grade level: one of only 5 certified AU by PCGS (and they have certified only 6 Uncirculated specimens). The strike is uneven and there is a bit of pitting on the reverse, most likely simply a reflection of the original planchet quality. The die had also started to rust and deteriorate by the time this specimen was struck, most clearly demonstrated by the large die cud next to the clock. Researcher John Lorenzo will be speaking at the upcoming ANA convention showing evidence of a specimen struck over a middle date Large Cent, making these most likely from the Hard Times period. Whatever the consensus is after the hypothesis is fully presented, it is likely that there will be more interest in these tokens than there had been previously. This example was struck on a rough planchet that shows weakness of strike and several small marks on the eagle. Listed on page 54 of the 2002 Guide Book.
