1789 TOKEN Mott Token, Thin Planchet, Engrailed Edge AU50 PCGS. Formerly offered as lot 13 in our 2002 September Long Beach Sale, where it was described in part as, "Believed to have been made somewhat later, presumably the 1789 date refers to the origination of the Mott firm. The thin planchet with engrailed edge is scarcer than those with plain edges or on thick planchets. Rare at this grade level...The strike is uneven and there is a bit of pitting on the reverse, most likely simply a reflection of the original planchet quality. The die had also started to rust and deteriorate by the time this specimen was struck, most clearly demonstrated by the large die cud next to the clock...This example was struck on a rough planchet that shows weakness of strike and several small marks on the eagle." Listed on page 54 of the 2003 Guide Book. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
