15.0 mm. One of the finest quality examples of the major design type George Washington Inaugural Button we have seen and the nicest we have offered of this very rare small-format button. Its surfaces show virtually no sign of wear and are 100% as made and defect-free. The original shank is perfectly attached and straight on the smooth reverse, as made. Overall, this button is evenly toned to a natural rich brown with attractive glossy surfaces. Any sign of irregularity are from the original planchet. The sharp distinct design details to the face are bold, with the appearance of Mint State. A similar button appeared at auction in September of 2021 and realized $6,875. Specialist collector Harold Cobb knew of just five examples in his 1968 listing, and thus these are considered a very rare major type. The finest Albert WI-17B example we have had the pleasure to offer.
