1789 George Washington Presidential Military Appointment Signed the First Year of Washington’s Presidency in NYC
GEORGE WASHINGTON (1732-1799). 1st President of the United States (April 30, 1789 to March 4, 1797); a Founding Father of the United States, serving as the Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War; presided over the 1787 Constitutional Convention held at Philadelphia.
September 29, 1789-Dated Federal Period, Partially-Printed Document Signed, “G. Washington” as President, measuring 14.5” x 11.25” (by sight), matted and framed to 18.5” x 15.5”, 1 page, “at the City of New York,” Fine. One of the Earliest Known Military Appointments Signed by George Washington during the very first year of his Presidency. Also Signed Twice by Henry Knox who signs once Registering this document at upper left, and again adding “Secretary for the Department of War” below his signature at bottom center. George Washington’s signature boldly appears in the lower right written in brown ink, measuring a large 2.75” long. This Appointment is for “John Smith, Esquire ... by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate,” his is Appointed a Captain in the “Regiment of Infantry in the Service of the United States.”

President Washington was given the right to “Commission all the Officers of the United States” per Article II, Section 3 of the United States Constitution, and he was the First to exercise this right, and by his new Presidential authority. Some conservation would greatly enhance this complete Document. There are some fold separations and overall moderate tone to the period paper, which appears to have been laid down for reinforcement at an earlier time. Overall, it remains quite clear and legible for both its black printed text and manuscript portions. The original Paper and Wax Official Seal is completely intact at the upper left corner. An extremely rare and historic President George Washington signed document. Not examined out of frame. This is the earliest and only Military Appointment we have handled during George Washington’s first year as President at New York City, then the nation's capital.
