1789 Constitution Signer Harrison Gray Otis Autograph Letter Signed Most Likely Addressed to Elbridge Gerry
HARRISON GRAY OTIS (1765-1848). Signer of the U.S. Constitution, one of the most important Leaders of the United States' first political party, the Federalists, one of the wealthiest men of Boston, reportedly worth $800,000 in 1846 (2014 equivalent to $6.5 Billion).
July 25, 1789-Dated Federal Period, Autograph Letter Signed, “H G Otis”, 4 pages, Boston, 9” x 7.25”, Choice Extremely Fine. A beautifully handwritten, very interesting content Letter in favor of the nomination of “Judge Sullivan” for Judge of the District of Massachusetts. The judge, it reads in part:

“... has been stigmatized and abused for not feigning those raptures in favor of every sentence of the new constitution, which few men of sound judgment and information really felt. It is moreover true that his character is traduced by the veteran Tories who resent his early exertions in the cause of freedom...”

As greetings are sent to “Mrs. Gerry” this letter is most likely addressed to (Elbridge) Gerry. Written while Harrison Gray was a member of the House and the Senate, a leader of the Hartford Convention, and Mayor of Boston. Other than a slight split between the two adjoining pages and a tape remnant, very fresh, clear and on crisp period laid paper. Ex: EAHA Auction, Nov. 1, 1997, Lot 204.
