1788 COPPER Vermont Copper, Bust Right VG8 Corroded Uncertified.<p>Ryder-31, Low R.5. 98.2 grains. This variety is also known as Vlack-23-88VT, since it fits into the series of American counterfeits of English Halfpennies. While the obverse legends bear the proper English legend of GEORGIVS III Rex, the reverse has the legend intended for Vermont coppers, INDE ET LIB. In fact, this reverse die was also used with three proper Vermont obverse dies (the most common is Ryder-25) and a Connecticut die (making Ryder-39, aka Miller-1788 1-I). This specimen has a nice light brown patina. There is a light planchet cutter mark on the right hand side of the reverse. The obverse has a minor planchet lamination at the upper right. One can read much of the reverse legend but not the date. The reverse of these never shows much central detail and a depression in the center of the reverse of this one probably just reflects the original planchet quality. A respectable example of a scarce variety.Ex: Four Landmark Collections (Bowers and Merena, 3/89), lot 5096.From the David Bruce Collection.
