<B>1788<COPPER> New Jersey Copper, Running Fox AU58 NGC.</B></I> Maris 75-bb, R.4. The always-popular Running Fox, located on the lower reverse legend, is actually a mintmark that identifies Bailey's Mint in New York City. According to Dan Freidus, "if the variety were to be named today there would probably be equal numbers of people wanting to call the animal a horse or dog." Examples of this variety were produced there between January and April 15, 1788, and they are punchlinked with the Nova Eborac and Excelsior Coppers, as well as the Brasher Doubloons. The 75-bb variety is a much scarcer die combination. It is characterized by a long die cud over (UNU)M, and another, even more prominent break from 7 to 9 o'clock on the obverse. The surfaces are glossy, dark brown, and show remarkably strong definition. A few more obvious marks are located in the center and to the right of the shield on the reverse.
