1787 Excelsior Copper VF25 Holed and Scratched Uncertified.
1787 Excelsior Copper VF25 Holed and Scratched Uncertified.<p>Indian & N.Y. Arms. Crosby VIII-6. Breen 990. 148.2 grains. Low R.7, about a dozen pieces known. One of the rare patterns for a New York coinage, none of which are common. Strong detail and close to full legends. However, the coin has been holed, as if for suspension to display the New York state seal on the reverse. The reverse has decent surfaces for the grade, but the obverse has tiny patches of verdigris and the right field has been scratched. Nonetheless, this is a desirable specimen of this rare and important coin. A historic issue whose exact position in our numismatic history is not known since there is no solid evidence telling us who made the dies or struck these coins. Listed on page 46 of the 2002 Guide Book.Ex: Stickney Collection (Henry Chapman, 6/07), lot 240; New Netherlands (11/56), lot 772; Oechsner Collection (Stack's, 9/88), lot 1234, (hammered down at $1900); Boyd, Ryder, Brand Sale (Bowers and Merena, 3/90), lot 1127, where it brought $2800.From the David Bruce Collection.
