1787 COPPER New York Excelsior Copper, Indian and New
1787 COPPER New York Excelsior Copper, Indian and New York Arms--Holed, Scratched--NCS. Fine Details. Indian & N.Y. Arms. Crosby VIII-6. Breen 990. 148.2 grains. Low R.7, about a dozen pieces known. One of the rare patterns for a New York coinage. Nicely defined, and the legends are close to full. However, the coin has been holed, as if for suspension to display the New York state seal on the reverse. The reverse has decent surfaces for the grade, but the lightly burnished obverse has a few tiny patches of verdigris and the right field has been scratched. Nonetheless, this is a desirable specimen of this very rare and important coin. Struck by a private mint operated by John Bailey and Ephraim Brasher, of Brasher doubloon fame.
