It is believed that the Excelsior pieces are actually patterns for coins intended to circulate in New York. The designer of these pieces was John Bailey, probably in concert with the legendary Ephraim Brasher. Evidently they were never produced in quantity and few survive today. This example ranks among the finest known.<BR>This coin is accompanied by a letter from Carl Carlson, dated April 25, 1989. Carlson believed this to be the third finest known piece following the Roper and J.E. Stiles specimens. In his letter he described the coin as, "...a well centered VF+, close to EF, with three small obverse marks (beneath the eagle's wing) which identify it in its previous appearances, and a concealed hairline scratch just right of the shield on the reverse. The fields have a deep jade green patination similar to a Roman copper coin, a stable surface that does not deteriorate, the devices are deep brown."<BR>The coin is remarkably well struck for a VF grade. In fact, the only area of mentionable weakness is on the tops of UNUM on the reverse. In addition to the hardly noticeable pedigree identifiers mentioned by Carlson, we also note a short scratch through the SI in EXCELSIOR. Scarcer than the Eagle Left variant, this historic coin should generate considerable excitement and bidding enthusiasm when it crosses the auction block.<BR><I>Ex: Charles Ira Bushnell Sale (S.H. & H.
