1787 COPPER New Jersey Copper, Small Planchet, Plain
1787 COPPER New Jersey Copper, Small Planchet, Plain Shield AU58 NGC. Maris 44-d, R.4. Generally golden-brown in color, although slender streaks of mahogany patina are also present and a couple of darker planchet flaws are noted on the reverse. Crisply struck, since only the center of the plow and the shield borders are not bold. The horse and shield devices have exceptional definition, and there are no obtrusive abrasions. Struck from moderately clashed dies. Perhaps the finest known example of this scarce variety; usually it is the Maris 43 obverse paired with his familiar d reverse. Struck a few degrees off center toward 6 o'clock on the obverse and 11 o'clock on the reverse, mostly affecting the denticles although the tops of a few letters in PLURIBUS are tight. Listed on page 56 of the 2005 Guide Book.
Ex: 199th Sale (Lyman Low, 10/19), lot 124; F.C.C. Boyd; John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part I (Stack's, 10/03), lot 158. Lot:5029
