1787 COPPER New Jersey Copper, Small Planchet, Plain 1787[COPPER] New Jersey Copper, Small Planchet,
1787<COPPER> New Jersey Copper, Small Planchet, Plain Shield VF Details, Corroded, NCS. Maris 36-J, Low R.7. It is telling about the rarity of this variety that the John J. Ford, Jr. example (not this piece) graded only About Good and realized $6,900. Walter Breen only knew of six examples when his Complete Encyclopedia was published, and Michael Hodder had similarly only seen six examples when he wrote about this variety in Part I of the Ford Sales. The present darkly toned example has clear details on the horse head, the date, the left side of the shield and plow, and the upper and left legends. The right borders are made illegible by heavy corrosion, the remainder of the piece is also porous but intact. This example is sharper than the Ford coin and equal to the Taylor coin, and may be the second most strongly detailed behind the high-grade Garrett specimen. A second Garrett coin, graded Good, was mis-attributed in that catalog. Listed on page 66 of the 2006 Guide Book.
From The Oak Collection of American Colonial Coinage.
