1787 COPPER New Jersey Copper, Outlined Shield VF30 1787[COPPER] New Jersey Copper, Outlined Shield
<B>1787<COPPER> New Jersey Copper, Outlined Shield VF30 PCGS.</B></I> Breen-955, M. 58-n, High R.4. This is one of three so-called "Camel Head" varieties, always overstruck on other coins. A richly defined medium brown example of this scarce New Jersey variety. Not fully struck on the central reverse, otherwise bold. Visually equal to, or finer than, either of the Ford Collection coins, and in the same "remarkably broken state of the obverse" as the second Ford coin, lot 190 in Part I of the Ford Sales. The obverse die has shattered into three heavy cracks from the center, the upper break affects details of the horse's head. Off center toward 12 o'clock, the central letters in NOVA CAESAREA are off the flan. For the variety, this is a lovely New Jersey, finer than nearly every other one we have seen. Struck over an unidentified type, although the complete date 1775 and exergue line from the undertype is clearly visible at the bottom of the reverse, leading to our conclusion that this is almost certainly a counterfeit British halfpenny.
