1787 COPPER Connecticut Copper, Horned Bust--Double 1787[COPPER] Connecticut Copper, Horned Bust--Do
<B>1787<COPPER> Connecticut Copper, Horned Bust--Double Struck--AU55 PCGS.</B></I> M.4-L, R.1. A relatively early die state of the famous Horned Bust variety, the 'horn' is present but a mere lump in the field beneath the chin. This horn fragment nonetheless makes attribution possible. Double struck by the dies, the dies rotated counterclockwise approximately 45 degrees between strikes. The double strike turns the devices into monstrosities, the portrait has two sets of noses and lips set well apart, and the reverse effigy has a third arm where the head would normally be. The head from the first strike is overlapped by the E in INDE from the second strike. An unusually smooth medium brown example, since no abrasions, verdigris, or planchet difficulties are encountered.
