1787<1C> Fugio Cent, Club Rays, Rounded Ends MS62 Brown NGC. Newman 3-D, R.3. Unlike the more plentiful Pointed Rays varieties struck in New Haven in 1787, the various Club Rays varieties were contemporary counterfeits. They were produced at Machin's Mills in New York between 1788 and 1789. Because they were made later, the Club Rays pieces did not participate in the Bank of New York hoard. Mint State Club Rays Fugios are exceptionally rare. The present piece is the only example certified as Mint State by either NGC or PCGS. There are only two Club Rays, Rounded Ends varieties, and both are scarce. N. 3-D was believed at one time to be scarcer than its N. 4-E counterpart, but our auction records indicate more appearances of the former. The upper three rings are repunched south. This mahogany-brown example has an occasional hint of planchet roughness, but there are no detected post-strike marks or defects. Listed on page 84 of the 2007 Guide Book.
