1787 1/2 C Massachusetts Half Cent MS66 Brown PCGS. Ryder 4-C. This is an extraordinarily well preserved representative of this otherwise easily obtainable die marriage. In fact, it is finer than the Uncirculated example that sold as lot 2111 in Bowers and Merena's March 1987 sale of the Frederick B. Taylor Collection. (That coin was graded Uncirculated MS-60 in the catalog, and the photo reveals a prominent spot in the left obverse field.) The present coin displays rich orange-brown toning over powerfully impressed and sharply detailed central devices. The denticles are not complete in all areas around the peripheries--a minor complaint for the type. There is not a single bothersome abrasion, and accuracy alone compels us to mention a well concealed reverse spot in the eagle's right (facing) wing feathers. One could hardly do better than to select this Gem to represent the 1787 Massachusetts Half Cent in their type collection. Listed on page 39 of the 2003 Guide Book. Population: 3 in 66 Brown, none are finer with this color designation (10/02). Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
