1786 COPPER New Jersey Copper, Narrow Shield VF20 Corroded Uncertified.
1786 COPPER New Jersey Copper, Narrow Shield VF20 Corroded Uncertified.<p>Maris 17-K. 116.5 grains. Struck over a copper with the seated Britannia reverse, the shield of which is clearly visible on the reverse. There is also a star from the undertype in the date region of the obverse. It is a star similar to that used on some Connecticut coppers and this coin was previously cataloged as being struck over a Connecticut copper. While that is likely, this coin is worthy of additional study time for its next owner. Even without a positive identification of the undertype, this is an interesting and historic demonstration of one source of planchets for coiners during the period of the Confederation. Slightly granular surfaces with a bit of corrosion and some central striking weakness, but medium brown color with lighter highlights make it fairly attractive.Ex: Earl Victor Tuttle Sale (Bowers and Ruddy, 6/81), lot 2633.From the David Bruce Collection.
