1786 Benjamin Franklin Born Boston AU50 Uncertified.
1786 Benjamin Franklin Born Boston AU50 Uncertified. Betts-620. Silver. Plain Edge. One of two variants of the Franklin Born Boston medal, this one has an inscription reverse rather than a winged genius figure, as seen on Betts-619. Struck in the Paris Mint beginning in 1786, these medals were struck in this format until 1832. Beginning in that year, the Mint adopted the practice of stamping gold and silver restrikes with an identifying mark. In 1841, this extended to all metals and the name of the metal was added in French.
The earliest strikings of this medal show only a die flaw under the I of ERIPUIT, while later strikings show the die flaw extending right under the left serif of the T. This piece shows that second extension to the right, and it also shows an outline of die rust around the portrait of Franklin, indicating a later restriking.
While not officially a part of the Comitia Americana series, the subject matter dictates that these medals be included in the Betts series. These medals are infrequently available in the pre-1832, plain edge format. This is a bright, deeply reflective example that shows just a bit of light, peripheral golden toning. A number of light contact marks and hairlines explain the grade, but there is little actual friction over the highpoints of the design.

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
