1785 COPPER Nova Constellatio Copper, Pointed Rays, Sm
1785<COPPER> Nova Constellatio Copper, Pointed Rays, Small Date AU55 NGC. Crosby 2-A, R.5. Most 1785 Pointed Rays Nova Constellatio pieces are Crosby 3-B, a Large Date variety. Four other 1785 Large Date die marriages are known, which includes a Blunt Rays variety, Crosby 1-B. Of the six 1785 die pairings, Crosby 2-A is the most desired, largely because of its rarity, but also for its status as the sole Small Date marriage. Crosby 2-A receives a separate Guide Book listing as "Small, Close Date," where it is priced at multiples of the 'common' Pointed Rays variety. This medium brown example is slightly soft in the centers, as usual for Crosby 2-A, but is essentially unabraded aside from minor rim nicks at 9 o'clock. Mildly granular near the NS in CONSTELLATIO. In our FUN Signature auction in January 2006, a PCGS AU58 of this variety auctioned for $10,350. NGC has certified just two pieces, the other as XF40. PCGS has certified only two AU examples, one as AU55 and the other as AU58. Listed on page 52 of the 2007 Guide Book.
