(1785) COPPER Bar Copper AU55 PCGS
(1785) COPPER Bar Copper AU55 PCGS. Breen-1145. The origins of the Bar Copper are little known. Per Breen, there was a mention of the issue in the Nov. 12, 1785 New Jersey Gazette: "A new and curious kind of coppers have lately made their appearance in New York. ... on the one side are thirteen stripes and on the other U.S.A. as was usual on the soldiers buttons." Originals, such as the present piece, can be identified by a small die break in the reverse center between bars, and by a small spur above the left end of the second bar. This medium golden-brown example is unabraded save for faint marks above the S. The left upright of the U is moderately granular. Listed on page 69 of the 2008 Guide Book. Population: 13 in 55, 16 finer (6/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
