(1785) COPPER Bar Copper AU55 PCGS. Breen-1145. Little
(1785)<COPPER> Bar Copper AU55 PCGS. Breen-1145. Little is known about the mysterious Bar Copper, aside from a mention of the issue in the Nov. 12, 1785 New Jersey Gazette: "A new and curious kind of coppers have lately made their appearance in New York. ... on the one side are thirteen stripes and on the other U.S.A. as was usual on the soldiers buttons." The design is simple, patriotic, and often copied. Originals, such as the present piece, can be identified by a small die break in the reverse center between bars, and by a small spur above the left end of the second bar. This light golden-brown example has smooth, clean surfaces, and is struck slightly off center toward 10 o'clock. A different AU55 PCGS Bar Cent realized $16,100 in a March 2006 ANR auction. Listed on page 69 of the 2007 Guide Book.
