RUFUS KING (1755-1827). American statesman and an important member who helped to frame and Signed the U.S. Constitution at the Constitutional Convention of 1787, typified constructive conservativism of the Federalist party, served as a U.S. Senator and as Minister to Great Britain.
November 20, 1783-Dated Revolutionary War Era, Autograph Note Signed, “Rufus King” as Justice of the Peace, at the conclusion of a 1-1/2 page legal document, at Essex, MA., measuring 9” x 7.25”, Choice Very Fine. This nicely penned Document is a Power of Attorney which Rufus King witnesses, noting that: “...Jonathan Jackson personally acknowledged this instrument to be his Deed. Before me (Signed) Rufus King, Just. Peace”. Notation at the conclusion is written neatly in King’s own script, just one year before he became a Member of the Continental Congress (1784-87). Later, as a Member of the Constitutional Convention in 1787, he helped frame the Federal Constitution and was instrumental in securing its ratification in Massachusetts, served in the U.S. Senate (1789-96 & 1813-25), U.S. minister to Great Britain (1796-1803 and 1825-26). He was an unsuccessful candidate for U.S. Vice President in 1804 and 1808 and for President in 1816. A scarce signature. Ex: EAHA Auction, Nov. 1, 1997, Lot 157, selling for $380.
