A popular early restrike made by coin dealer W. J. Taylor of London circa 1850-1860. Called “very rare” by Walter Breen, who cites the 1982 auction sale of the Robison specimen for $500 (an impressive price for the time but certainly low today). While George Washington Draped Bust Restrikes in general are more common than the “Original” Draped Bust, this one’s important Variety happens to be the tough “Plain Edge” issue. How tough you ask? Well, to recent date PCGS has certified 156 examples of the “Engrailed Edge” type (in all color designations combined) as compared to just 40 of this “Plain Edge” issue. And this is a charming, fully original piece with Prooflike surfaces displaying some old flashy natural blue-green and reddish-gold toning on the obverse and reverse.
