1783 John Chalmers Annapolis Shilling with Short Worm Breen-1011 PCGS graded XF45. Attractive glossy medium steel gray. The surfaces are smooth and the only marks are a tiny pinprick midway between the feet of the two birds and a microscopic planchet lamination near the dentils at AP in ANNAPOLIS as struck. Nicely struck slightly off center to K-4.5. The date and legends are all strong these shillings often come with weakly struck areas. A very nice example of this historic early American coinage. These were struck by John Chalmers, a silversmith in Annapolis, Maryland, to help alleviate the shortage of acceptable silver coins in the area. The short worm version is slightly more common than the long worm type, but both are quite rare. PCGS population 9; 7 finer: 3 in 50, 2 in 53, 2 in 55. PCGS #596. Estimated Value 7,500 - UP
