Antique American sampler needlework textile, dated 1783, signed Elizabeth Ann Cochran, Peabody Ma. 18th C. American samplers are rare, especially those that can be so well identified. This one appears to be the work of a very young girl, perhaps age 7-10, born 1783. Some of the [ s ] are written like [ f ], as they were in the 18th C. Long, narrow unbleached linens like this were frequently used for vertical 17th and early 18th C. needlework but not usually seen afterwards, another rare feature of this sampler. Stitching includes satin, eyelet, feather, chain, as well as cross stitch. Much of it is worked with a single strand of thread, some with multiple strand. Colors: peach, cream, teal blue, black, brown, and bright red (digital camera causes the red to appear to be running -- it is NOT). Unbleached linen color is like medium walnut. In the horizontal rows of stitching there are some missing threads (perhaps eaten by a long-dead cloth mite found in a fold). Somehow the piece sustained two small slits at the bottom edge which had been scotch-taped on back. But it has no holes, no alterations, no repairs, creases not yet ironed out. 8-1/2W x 23-1/2L inches. Frame is 1890 oak molding, put on after sampler turned up folded in storage.
