1783 3PENCE Chalmers Threepence XF45 PCGS. Breen-1018. A lovely sea-green example with bold devices and generally smooth fields. 1783, CHALMERS, and THREE are well struck, while ANNAP and PENCE have a couple of soft letters. John Chalmers was a silversmith from Annapolis, Maryland. He was one of the few individuals to strike private silver coins during the 18th century. Breen speculates the pieces were issued to promote his family business, but Chalmers may also have felt he was performing a civic duty by replacing cut and worn slick Spanish-American silver with newly coined pieces of standard weight. Listed on page 49 of the 2007 Guide Book. Population: 1 in 45, 1 finer (12/06).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
