1783 1C Washington & Independence Cent, Draped Bust--B
1783<1C> Washington & Independence Cent, Draped Bust--Broadstruck--MS65 Brown NGC. Ex: Ford. Baker-2, R.1. No Toga Button. This example has certain characteristics that are similar to the so-called "Soho restrike" listed by Breen in his Complete Encyclopedia as number 1191 and struck in brass. The example offered here is copper and not brass as Breen suggested. It is definitely not to be confused with the so-called Taylor Restrike, which has a Large 3 in the date and is often seen in high grades. Not so for Baker-2, and in fact, the present piece is single finest certified by either NGC or PCGS. The surfaces have a satiny appearance with medium to dark brown color and hints of original orange luster. It is similar in appearance to later coinage routinely described as Broadstruck. The surfaces are excellent, with only a few tiny blemishes or imperfections. The present piece is plated on page 76 of the 2007 Guide Book.
Ex: John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part II (Stack's, 5/04), lot 4. Earlier purchased by Ford from Fred Baldwin in 6/67.
