1783<1C> Washington & Independence Cent, Draped Bust, No Button AU55 PCGS. Breen-1191, described by Walter Breen as "Soho restrike, small date. Brass. Plain edge. 2 known." Alternatively, this is described by PCGS as "Copper. Wash, Sm Mil, PE" (Washington, Small Military Bust, Plain edge, Copper).
A rare variant of the familiar Baker-2 design, struck in brass instead of the usual copper, according to Breen. This is the Breen plate coin, listed as example 1, struck from "heavily clashed and rusted original dies." The clash marks (as made), from the profile and hair braid, outline the lower half of the seated effigy on the reverse. Three short, parallel die scratches are on the reverse border near 3 o'clock, across a small section of die rust; these possibly represent an attempt to reduce the effects of the die rust on the struck coins. The brassy light brown color darkens near the borders with a few deeper splashes of color in the fields. An old diagonal scratch across the chest of the seated figure does not distract. A rare and unusual piece for the Washingtonia specialist. The following pedigree is from the Breen Complete Encyclopedia.
Ex: T.
