<B>1783 1C Washington Unity States Cent XF45 NGC.</B></I> Breen-1187, Vlack 27-X, R.8. The Unity States pieces are backdated token issues with a bust representing Washington on the obverse, and an imitation of the reverse from contemporary federal cents issued from 1793 to 1807. The common basic design is often seen in colonial cabinets, even those less advanced.<BR> The Triple Leaf variant described in Breen's <I>Complete Encyclopedia</B></I> is possibly unique. The discovery coin appeared in the December 1972 Harmer, Rooke auction. Breen attributes the discovery of this variety to James King, while Russell Rulau and George Fuld note that James King bought the coin at the Harmer, Rooke auction in <I>Medallic Portraits of Washington</B></I>. Not impossibly, King may have done both.<BR> Nicely preserved olive and dark brown surfaces serve as a backdrop for faint abrasions and insignificant hairlines. Rough diagonal grooves at the centers are strictly as made. All of these various surface anomalies positively identify the coin as Breen's plate example with enlarged photos on page 135 of his <I>Encyclopedia</B></I>. It appears that the plate in Rulau and Fuld, second addition, is a low-quality reproduction of the Breen plate, perhaps digitally enhanced to remove the characteristic obverse planchet roughness. A tiny nick at the leaf tip below T in UNITY appears on both plates, and also on this coin.<BR> The magnificent John Ford collection did not include an example of this variety, and we believe that it remains unique. We are certainly not aware of any others. The advanced specialist in Washingtonia must acquire this coin or miss the opportunity to own the variety.
