Revolutionary War Problems Facing Various NH Churches
December 18, 1781-Dated Revolutionary War Period, Manuscript Document Signed, by Moderator “Thomas Fessenden” of Walpole and Scribe “Edward Goddard” of Swanzey, regarding multiple, important Problems facing the various New Hampshire Churches, Choice Very Fine.
This original Manuscript Document measures 8” x 12.5” being well written upon handmade laid rag period paper, 2 pages, back to back, with folds and an extra half sheet that is partially attached with a docket reading “Report of Council At Cornish 1781” at top. It carefully outlines the results and recommendations of an Ecclesiastical Council held at Cornish (New Hampshire). This Council being made up of representatives of various churches in and about New Hampshire. The names of their various delegates are listed, who were called to discuss problems facing the various churches, including the splitting an existing church, and dealing with various complaints of their parishioners.

This specific Document is Signed by Moderator Thomas Fessenden of Walpole, and Scribe Edward Goddard of Swanzey. As stated by a previous owner, it’s pedigree is tied to the personal papers of the Reverend Edward Goddard himself, who was the Pastor of the Church at Swanzey, New Hampshire. Goddard was also a member of the Convention that drafted the First Constitution of the State. It is in very good overall condition, quite clean, well written, with 2 pages of extensive text and in dark brown legible ink. A most interesting and historic, early American document on religious issues of New England and New Hampshire of the Revolutionary War Period.
