1781 Rev War Broadsheet - Supplying the Continental Army 10,000 Gallons of RUM
American Revolution
Revolutionary War Broadsheet The State of New Hampshire to Provide Rum to the Continental Army
August 31, 1781-Dated, Printed Broadsheet, State of New-Hampshire, “AN ACT for Supplying the Continental Army with Ten Thousand Gallons of West-India RUM,” Fine.
This exceedingly rare original Broadsheet Document was Printed in Exeter, New Hampshire by Zacharias Fowle, four pages, printed upon laid period paper, measuring 13” x 8.75”. This historic 1781 Revolutionary War Broadside details each of New Hampshire counties and towns proportional share of rum - the minimum was 15 gallons, with most having to provide well over that amount, to help Supply the Continental Army! This document also orders the appointment of Joshua Wentworth to collect those spirits. There is some light dampstaining at bottom, and a 1” split at the left side of the centerfold and edge chipping in lower left corner. These imperfections, however, have occurred with no loss of text, and the print has remained quite crisp, dark, and clear. This historic Broadside likely was sent to the town of Hopkinton, as “Hopkinton” has been handwritten at the upper right. Less than 6 copies of this rare Broadsheet are known to exist! Evans 17253.
