This cataloger has located another portrait by Illustrator and engraver Jean Michel Moreau (1741-1814) that was reportedly sketched from life in 1780. Both John Paul Jones and Moreau were in Paris that same year in 1780 and both were Masons, so odds are that the two indeed met to create this historic portrait. An impressive image showing Captain Jones in a chest-up pose wearing his naval uniform looking to his right. Below, text in French at the lower edge portion mentions design after a drawing from life made in Paris in May 1780 by J. M. Moreau the Younger, and engraved by “J. B. Fosseyeux, 1781”. Overall, crisp and clean displaying excellent print quality of detail. A rarely encountered original Revolutionary War period engraving, originally from life, of John Paul Jones, ready for display.
