July 21, 1780-Dated, Revolutionary War Period, Manuscript Document Signed, “Capt. Simeon Smith,” Windham, Connecticut, Choice Very Fine.
This August 21, 1780-Dated Autograph Document Signed (on verso) “Capt. Simeon Smith”, measures about 7.5” x 3.5” (irregularly cut from a larger document) on laid paper. Reads in full; “Windham July 21st 1780 / Recd ---- of the Selectman of Windham four Tents Three Iron Potts with Bails and four Woodden (sic) Bowls the Property of the Town of Windham for the use of the Company belong to the Regt whereof Majr Benjn Clark is Major, now under Marching orders to Chatham for the three months Tour of Duty which Tents Potts and Bowls I promise to return at the End of said Expedition.” On verso it is filled out and Signed by Smith, “Capt. Simeon Smith, Rect. of 4 Tents, 3 Potts,4 Bowls” and in another hand, “July 27 1780 / 1 Slate Gun / No. 6”.
Simeon Smith (1744-1799), born & died in Ashford, Windham County, Connecticut. Captain Simeon Smith of the town of Ashford, upon hearing of the Battles of Lexington and Concord, was one of the Connecticut soldiers of Bradley's Battalion, Wadsworth Brigade, who marched for the Relief of Boston in the Lexington Alarm, April 1775.
