Revolutionary War Commodity Bond Treasury Certificate
State of Massachusetts Bay. “Commodity Bond.” Treasury Certificate at 6% Interest £2250. January 1, 1780. Revolutionary War. Anderson MA-22. Very Fine.
Rated as Rarity-4 by Anderson, indicating that there are only 76 to 200 known of this variety. This £2250 certificate was payable to Maj David Bradish and his endorsement remains bold on the back. A quick search of genealogy records reveals quite a few records for a Major David Brandish during this period in Massachusetts, who was involved in the historic BAGADUCE EXPEDITION of 1779. A number of other contemporary notations are also seen on the back, with several small tears and folds are observed at the margins on this example. An important and historic Revolutionary War bond, this type being the first to be issued in the Western World with an inflation hedge and value against common “Commodities” as the paper money was facing increasing inflation and less acceptance by the general population. This is a particularly clean and pleasing example of this scarce Treasury Certificate.
