EDWARD A. HOLYOKE (1728-1829), American Educator and Physician, Best Known for his Work during the Smallpox Epidemic.
February 4, 1779-Dated, Manuscript Document Twice Signed, , measuring about 5” x 8”, 1 page, Salem, (MA), Fine. Being a Medical Bill Receipt from, “Mr Aaron Wait to E.A. Holyoke Dr.” It appears that this invoicing and bill ran from November 1765 until January 1779. Dr. Holyoke treated and charged Wait and his family for “Medicines administered & Attendance”. Text at bottom in Holyoke’s hand reads, “Salem - Feby 4th 1779 Recd Payment by his Account to this Debt & Cash in full”. Folds, small fold intersection hole at center with expected slight tone, boldly written in deep brown ink on period laid paper. A nice example signed by Edward Holyoke as a Physician, and best known for his work during the Smallpox epidemic.
HOLYOKE, EDWARD AUGUSTUS (1728-1829) Best known for his work with the smallpox epidemic. He allowed for Dr. Nathaniel Perkins to inoculate him with the disease and survived the treatment. Due to his survival, Holyoke was able to convince six hundred of his own patients to inoculated with only two of the patients dying. Essentially, Holyoke can be contributed with developing the first steps of a smallpox vaccine and later was able to further develop the vaccine.
