Mexico - Shipwreck Silver Coin - El Cazador - 2 Reales - 1779 Mo-F.F. On January 11, 1784, the Spanish brigantine of war, El Cazador, sailed from Veracruz, Mexico, bound for New Orleans. The ship was carrying 450,000 pieces of newly minted silver coins. The King of Spain, Carlos III (1759-1788) authorized the coins to be used to redeem the nearly worthless Spanish paper money being used in Spanish owned Louisiana. The ship never made it to its destination, sinking with her cargo and crew in the winter seas, disappearing without a trace. Without his cargo of silver coins to solidify the Spanish monetary system in Louisiana, Carlos III was forced to sell or trade the territory. In 1800, a reluctant Carlos IV (1788-1808) conveyed Louisiana to France’s Emperor Napoleon. Three years later, Napoleon sold Louisiana to Thomas Jefferson for the princely sum of $15 million. The demise of El Cazador changed the course of US history. On August 2, 1993, the location of the sunken El Cazador was discovered by Captain Jenny Murphy of the fishing vessel ”Mistake," 209 years after her disappearance. ***Coin, Currency & All Items Listed in this auction - Grades, Conditions and Values are not Safe Deposit Coins LLC Responsibilty.
