FRANCIS HOPKINSON (1737-1791). Signer of the Declaration of Independence as a Delegate from New Jersey, Federal Judge, American Author, and he played a key role in the Design of the First American Flag and the Great Seal of the United States of America.
September 26th, 1778-Dated Revolutionary War Period, Partly-Printed Document Signed, “Fr. Hopkinson” as United States of America Continental Congress Treasurer of Loans, 1 page, measuring 7.25” x 3.5”, Choice Extremely Fine. Continental Congress Treasurer of Loans form on the State of Pennsylvania, made to the well regarded (Reverend) Simeon Van Artsdalen. Being a Fourth Bill of Exchange, this bright, clean and fresh Continental Treasury form is beautifully printed in green and black, upon watermarked “UNITED STATES 4” fine quality laid period paper. Two small ink erosion holes at top in the written number “18” and on the serial number. It is made to (Reverend) “Simeon Van Artsdalen” (1753-1786) Pastor at the Dutch Reformed Church of Readington, New Jersey; (he graduated Queens College in 1780 and was well known for his discourse on owning Slaves and Slavery, even though he himself owned two Slaves!). This Certificate made for $18 on “Interest due on Money borrowed by the United States.” Countersigned “Tho: Smith” as Commissioner of the Continental Loan-Office in the State of Pennsylvania. “To the Commissioner or Commissioners of the United States at Paris.” Endorsed on the blank verso by the noted (Reverend) “Simeon Van Artsdalen.” This impresive Certificate made to and endorsed by having a 2.75” long superb, vivid deep brown “Fr(ancis) Hopkinson” signature.
