1779 American Revolution French Calendar Medal in Brass
1779-Dated American Revolution, French Calendar Medal, Struck in Brass, Choice Very Fine.
38 mm. Struck in Brass, having mostly extremely sharp details with an excellent mellow golden-brass color and smooth surfaces providing superior eye appeal. The mention of King Louis XVI is prominent. Highly detailed but for one weakly struck portion on the reverse center, having even wear and is very attractive for display. A popular Revolutionary War period medal.
Although this medal is in French, it was struck in England for France, American French colonies, and the French West Indies. It may sound amazing to some, but being enemies in war did not mean merchants had to forfeit profit. In fact, they made more profit during wars than they did during peace time. At any rate, people would buy this type of calendar medals as pocket piece to carry around.

These medals were handy little things to have. This one here may have even been carried by Lafayette! Or, it could have been carried into the Battle of Savannah in October of 1779, where the French lost over 600 soldiers either killed or wounded.
