1778 Letter Written to General Edward Hand
1778 Letter Written to General Hand Regarding the Raising of Volunteers. Two pages, 8” x 13.25”, Bedford, March 20, 1778, signed by George Wood, David Espy and Benjamin Elliot, to Brigadier General Edward Hand and George Clymer, Ft. Pitt. In this letter Wood, Espy and Elliot acknowledge their orders for raising three companies of volunteers but complain that a certain Colonel Piper has made their task impossible by offering to pay officers more than the rate established by the Continental Army. It reads in part: “…We have already had convincing Proofs that it will be the greatest Impediment to our executing our Commission with Satisfaction to ourselves & Service to our Country, as Part of them are raised to think themselves entitled to that Pay.” The letter is ragged at the margins and splits in the creases, but still bright and legible with the usual fold creases, else very good. Ex.
