1777-Dated Revolutionary War Period, American Pennsylvania Identified Scrimshawed Powder Horn, Decorated with Carving of “Philadelphia,” Choice Very Fine.
This beautiful and authentic American Scrimshaw powder horn is very clean with wood large end plug and carved pouring spout, lacking stopper plug and has partial traces of leather loops for a strap. Inscribed, “Philadelphia” with a decorative well executed City and Harbor scene and with “Ens. Henderson Bn. Penna. Musquitteers And 1777 A.D.” Measures about 8” long. The inscribed title: “Ens” indicates the rank of Ensign in the Continental Army, which was the lowest ranked commissioned officer in the Army during the Revolutionary War. The rank of Ensign was abolished in the U.S. Army in the Army Organization Act of 1815. Research indicates that it possibly belonged to or was etched by Ensign John Henderson of County Down, Ireland. Born in 1747, emigrated in 1758, and served in the Pennsylvania military in 1777. In overall pleasing Very Fine used condition.
