1777 Revolutionary War Provisions for a Connecticut Soldier’s Family
May 1777-Dated Revolutionary War, Manuscript Document Signed, “Elisha Stoddard,” for the “Committee,” Accounting of Provisions & Other Necessaries of Life, for Connecticut Soldier’s Family, Choice Very Fine.
This rare Provisions Accounting Document for a Soldier’s family is boldly written in rich brown, having excellent clear penmanship that is easily readable. It lists basic items specifically by quantity and by, “Stated Price” and “Going Price” thus reflecting the high inflation rates being paid. Revolutionary War document listing the provisions sold to the family of a soldier, Asa Andrus, 1 page, 12” x 13.75”. The header Reads, in part:

“A Bill of Expenses in Providing Provisions & other Necessaries of Life for the Family of Asa Andrus a Sergt in Capt Barnards Comp in Col Wyllys Regt in the Continental Army. Delivered to them at the Price Stated by two Acts of the Assembly. One made Dec. 18 1776 and the other in May A.D. 1777.” - Docket on the blank reverse reads, if full: “Elisha Stoddard Acct. Providing for Asa Andrus’s Family - No 13 - Exd.”

This Document filled out and Signed by Elisha Stoddard at bottom right. Expected light even age tone and document is archivally reinforced at the horizontal fold on the blank reverse. Impressive and highly unusual showing the State of Connecticut fulfilling obligations to support its soldier’s families who are serving their country during the American Revolutionary War. Overall, in very pleasing condition and is excellent for display.
