<Our item number 139379>1776 Continental Currency. "CURRENCY". Pewter. PCGS graded AU-55 CAC Approved. Some mint luster still visable. Always in great demand by both Colonial enthusiasts and dollar collectors. The strike on this early pewter issue is nearly always very sharp, fortunately, and the present sharp About Uncirculated 55 is no exception. The obverse is essentially "bold" with the only softness found at the central sun dial. CAC has certified this as accurately graded, and we can append the term "beautiful eye-appeal" since it outshines most others of the Type. The two main designs of the 1776 Continental pieces have the word CURRENCY with either a single R or a double R, this being the latter.

Although this issue has traditionally been referred to as a "Dollar" -- as numerous pieces were struck in pewter and as only a few were made in silver -- it has been theorized the pewter pieces may actually have done service as a smaller denomination, possibly the Cent. Another belief is that the piece was in fact planned as a Dollar coin and was simply fiat money in the manner of contemporary Continental paper money (The design used on the 1776 Continental "Dollar" is derived from one of the paper note issues.) Pop 7; 23 finer (PCGS # 794).
Estimated Value $40,000 - 45,000.

Our item number 139379
<IMAGES>

</IMAGES>
