1776 Continental Currency. CURENCY. Pewter. PCGS MS64
CURENCY variety from an unknown mintage of probably less than one hundred. Pewter, fully struck gem, well centered in original gun metal pewter grey. The obverse is near-proof, the reverse is full proof. While technically possible, a finer example is not likely. This type is the first silver dollar sized coin proposed by the then new Continental Congress, although the reason for their manufacture or even exactly who made them under what authority is currently unknown. Probably from a design by Ben Franklin. There are ten equal and two finer certified by the grading services. Similar examples in slightly lower condition have sold for close to $100,000 at auction in the past.
