1776 $1 Continental Dollar, CURRENCY, Pewter XF45 NGC. Crosby Pl. VIII, 16. Newman 2-C. Breen-1092. While the Continental dollars have been labeled as pewter coins for many years, the actual composition is tin. The two materials are quite similar, although pewter is actually a combination of tin and lead, while these pieces do not contain any amount of lead. The surfaces on both sides of this pleasing example have deep gray color with slightly lighter gray on the devices. These devices are somewhat shallow in appearance, especially at the center, although all of the design details on each side are fully legible. The few light scratches and other insignificant blemishes that are seen on the surfaces of this example are clearly consistent with the grade, as well as the composition and age of this piece.
The entire design on both sides of the Continental dollars were intended to promote American independence. Many societal changes have occurred over the 230 years since these pieces were produced. Casual observers today, for example, read the inscription MIND YOUR BUSINESS with a chuckle while giving thought to the idea that one should not meddle in the affairs of another. At the time these pieces were produced, the inscription in combination with the sundial alluded to the amount of time available to tend to business matters and other needs.
