1776 $1 Continental Dollar, CURRENCY, Pewter, EG FECIT--Damaged--NCS. AU Details. Crosby Pl. VIII, Newman 3-D, Breen-1095, R.3. The well known EG FECIT variety, which provides the best evidence that the Continental dollar dies were engraved by Elisha Galludet. Some numismatists believe that these pieces were struck to replace or redeem paper Continental currency, although contemporary evidence is scarce. This dark and mildly granular steel-gray example is splendidly detailed but slightly wavy, and the edges have a few moderate dings. Study beneath a loupe locates occasional pinscratches. Continental dollars with virtually full design detail are rarely seen.
